Do you sell products in your e-shop intended for customers over 18 years of age, such as tobacco products, alcohol, pyrotechnics, and similar items? In that case, the law requires you to verify your customers’ age, specifically at the moment the purchase contract is concluded – i.e., when the customer clicks the order submission button. In today’s guide, we will show you how to easily set up age verification in WooCommerce.
How to verify age at the WooCommerce checkout?
To verify customer age, you will need an account with the Adulto.cz service. This service offers multiple verification methods and is paid (typically just a few CZK per verification). You will also need the implementation Toret Adulto.cz plugin, which connects your e-shop with this service. The plugin is available free of charge.
1. Register for the Adulto.cz service by filling out the form at https://partner.adulto.cz/registrace/.
2. Log in to your Adulto account using the credentials you received, click New website…
…and fill in the details of the website where you want to verify customer age.
3. After entering the website details and clicking Add website, you will see your access credentials – a public key and a secret key. Copy these; you will need them later.
4. Download and install the Toret Adulto plugin. In the plugin settings, enter the public and secret keys into the appropriate fields.
5. You can also configure the placement of the Adulto widget and the language. The Block orders feature should remain enabled – in this case, customers will not be able to submit an order without verifying their age.
6. Save the changes.
7. Open the product detail of the item for which you want to require age verification. In the Product data box, under the Age verification section, enable the verification feature. Repeat this for all products that require age verification.
8. Save the changes.
You have now configured age verification at checkout. If the order contains a product that requires verification, the Adulto age verification widget will appear at checkout, and the order cannot be submitted without completing the verification.
