# Inline payment gateway vs. redirect: Which is better for your e-shop?

10/04/2024

Payment gateways are now a standard part of any e-shop – customers like them as a payment method, and they are also very convenient for e-shop owners. However, not all gateways are the same.

In general, payment gateways can be divided into two predominant types: inline and redirect. What is the difference between them, and which one should you choose for your e-shop? You’ll find out in today’s article.

## Difference between inline and redirect payment gateways

If a customer selects a payment gateway as the payment method in an e-shop, submitting the order **starts the payment process**. This process differs depending on whether the e-shop uses an inline or a redirect payment gateway.

### What is a redirect payment gateway?

A redirect payment gateway is one that **redirects the customer to a separate payment gateway page** to complete the payment. This page is secured with an SSL certificate and guides the customer through the payment process.

Depending on the specific gateway, the customer can choose from multiple payment methods (card payment, bank button, e-wallet, etc.) and complete the payment.

After confirming (or cancelling) the payment, the customer is redirected back to the e-shop – typically to a thank-you page.

A redirect payment gateway redirects the customer to a separate page (here: the GP Webpay payment gateway).

### What is an inline payment gateway?

An inline payment gateway does not redirect the customer away from the e-shop. Instead, it **appears in a pop-up window**, or less commonly it is embedded directly on the checkout page. The customer stays on the e-shop where they are shopping.

At the same time, the security of payment details is still **handled by the payment gateway provider** (just like with the redirect option). The only requirement for the e-shop in this case is to use HTTPS, which is nearly standard for e-shops anyway.

[![GoPay inline payment gateway in WooCommerce](https://www.toret.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GoPay-inline-platebni-brana-ve-WooCommerce-1024x627.png "GoPay inline payment gateway in WooCommerce")](https://www.toret.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/10 / Go Pay-inline-platebni-brana-ve-WooCommerce.png)

An inline gateway with the e-shop page visible in the background feels more trustworthy (Go Pay inline in WooCommerce).

## Which payment gateway should you choose for your e-shop – inline or redirect?

The difference between an inline and a redirect payment gateway is simply whether it **redirects or does not redirect** the customer from the e-shop to another page. It may seem like a small detail, but it has a **significant psychological impact**.

Redirecting to another website (even with a security certificate) often **feels less trustworthy** to customers. More customers fail to complete the payment in such gateways because they worry it might be a fraudulent page.

According to a survey*, **customers complete 9.3% more payments via an inline gateway**, simply because they pay “directly in the e-shop” they trust.

An inline payment gateway therefore tends to be **more conversion-friendly**. In terms of price, inline gateways are usually similar to redirect gateways, and implementation is not difficult either. It seems we have a clear winner for e-shops.

The issue, however, is that not all payment gateway providers offer an inline version. If you don’t want to switch providers, one way to boost conversions may be **customizing the redirect payment gateway**.

### Payment gateway customization

Some payment gateway providers offer so-called **visual customization of the payment gateway**. This means you can adjust the look and feel of the gateway interface to some extent so it resembles your e-shop.

Typically, this involves changing the gateway’s color scheme or adding your logo. This can **increase trust and therefore conversions** in customers’ eyes.

Customization is often available for both redirect and inline payment gateways.

## Inline payment gateway in a WooCommerce e-shop

Just like classic redirect gateways, inline payment gateways can be easily implemented in a WooCommerce e-shop using suitable plugins.

From our plugin selection, you can choose:

- **Inline payment gateways**
  - [Comgate](https://www.toret.net/product/comgate/) (inline, redirect)
  - [GoPay Inline](https://www.toret.net/product/gopay/)
- **Payment gateways with visual customization**
  - [ČSOB payment gateway](https://www.toret.net/produkt/csob/) (redirect)
  - [The Pay 2.0](https://www.toret.net/produkt/thepay-2-0/) (redirect)
  - [Comgate](https://www.toret.net/product/comgate/) (inline, redirect)
  - [GoPay Inline](https://www.toret.net/product/gopay/)

## Conclusion

The choice of payment gateway affects how many payments are successfully completed. **An inline payment gateway is more conversion-friendly** because it feels more trustworthy to customers. With a redirect payment gateway, you can improve its performance through visual customization.
